We sail 100nm's again trying to get further south and make some distance before the low pressure systems brings winds turning against us again, then we prepare and wait for the sea to calm and the winds to turn in our favour but can't seem to find any space in marinas further south. The need to head south is complicated with Janine's planned return to the UK for a long weekend and the need to be within distance of an international airport with flights to Bristol. We have been aiming for Faro but Lisbon is now closer to us albeit with fewer flight options. And from here in Nazare a taxi is 1h15 comparable to the time it would take to get across Lisbon city to the airport.

While en route our starboard rudder became increasingly noisy, like a loud rattle and knocking sound that seems to be getting worse. So fortunately while here we've managed to drop the rudder, check the bearings and discover a bigger problem within the rudder itself. This leads to rudder archaeology to cut and dig to find the skeleton structure within only to confirm that the rudder post and three cross beams have unwanted movement between them and they need welding together. No small job. But at least: 1) we discovered it now, 2) we have time to do the repair without impacting or plans further, and 3) there is a handy naval yard here willing to help.
